Who we are

Where Faith and Community Unite

Soulful Muslims was founded in 2015 by a group of families and friends driven by a powerful purpose — to create a supportive network rooted in Islamic values that empowers the African-American Muslim community.

Our mission

Advancing Faith, Sustaining Families, Fortifying Community

Our vision

Empowered African American Muslims leading the Black community and the nation at large

What drives us

Faith, Family, Community

Faith

Submission to Allah guides our every action as we strive to incorporate religious teachings into our daily lives and the Soulful Muslims community.

Family

Nurturing strong family units is central to our goals. We cultivate an environment that promotes successful families built on Islamic principles of love and respect.

Community

A unified community is a pillar of strength. We foster a supportive network where African-American Muslims find a sense of belonging, understanding, and collective growth.

Our history

The Story of Soulful Muslims

From humble beginnings hosting small gatherings, Soulful Muslims has grown into a non-profit impacting thousands of families — providing resources, running community events, and advocating for representation.

  1. 2024

    Pre-Ramadan Fundraiser for Islamic-Centered School

Soulful Muslims is imagining a future of African American Muslim leaders where our children are leading the way with Islamic values that uplift not only Muslim communities but America and the world. This event was the first of its kind in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and showed that African American Muslims are ready and willing to lead and finance a world class education for our children.

  2. 2023

    Soulful Eid

With COVID truly behind us, we were able to celebrate Soulful Eid again in Watkins Park. In a sign of how far we have come as a community, the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, the County Executive of Prince George’s County and a member of the Prince George’s County Council all came to share in our celebration, and to recognise the role African American Muslims have to play in politics and community life in the years ahead.

  3. 2015

    The First Soulful Eid

Where it all began. It hit 104 degrees the day of the first Soulful Eid, but that did not stop people coming together to celebrate. Over 700 people joined us, and what Imam Johari would later recall as most refreshing was the sheer number of Muslim children. Soulful Muslims was born out of the call to the “soul” of African American Muslims in the Washington, DC metropolitan area to build a welcoming, supportive, self-sustaining community for African-American Muslim families.

A message from the CEO

Why did I decide to become the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of Soulful Muslims?

It is so crucial and imperative that African American Muslims are part of the conversation about the future of Muslims in America and around the world. Too often, African American Muslims are not at the table or even in the room when issues come up affecting Muslims in America. Soulful Muslims aims to change that by thinking globally and acting locally — providing programming to fund healthy family initiatives, to enhance community capacity building, and to foster leadership development.
